The HyperX Cloud Alpha S has long held its reputation as an exceptional gaming headset, offering unparalleled sound quality, comfort, and durability at its price point.
Although it does come with a couple of drawbacks such as a below average microphone and a lack of additional features, the HyperX Cloud Alpha S, remains a very solid option that I cannot recommend streamers enough.
A big reason why this headset feels so comfortable is because both earcups are equipped with plush memory foam cushioning enveloped in synthetic leather, and the underside of the headband also boasts matching padding.
Additionally, it comes with an alternative pair of earpads covered in fabric. And while these fabric earpads offer a more open sound profile, resulting in reduced bass, they are the better option for extended wear.
Overall, the HyperX Cloud Alpha S is a very solid headset, especially if gaming is what you’re after, and if you’re not really planning on using its mic. It’s very comfortable, sounds very good, offers good isolation, and works across a lot of platforms, all for an incredible price of $129.99.

HyperX has taken a step to enhance the modest Cloud Alpha model with this improved version of it, a $129.99 gaming headset that was given the “S” at the end of its name.
And while the evolution of the name is not startling by any means, the upgrade includes a 7.1-channel USB sound card and earcup switches designed to enhance bass response, all for just an additional $30.
While these improvements function as intended, the Cloud Alpha S retains the same sound signature as its predecessor – a focus on mids, offering a bold and pleasant sound.
The headset boasts a sturdy aluminum frame and ear cup support forks, ensuring resistance to corrosion and durability while keeping its weight minimal. Its headband and ear cups are thoughtfully designed with memory foam cores, covered in faux leather for an added touch of style, and it even includes an extra set of ear cups with cloth covers to promote breathability.
Also, those with larger head sizes (just like me) will find the memory foam construction particularly comfortable as it alleviates clamping pressure, which is usually what makes us have intense headaches after long sessions.
How to Connect the Hyperx Cloud Alpha S?
The wired Cloud Alpha S can work with any modern game console through its three-foot, 3.5 mm headset cable. Nonetheless, it has a standout feature and it is its bundled USB external surround sound card, which is connected to the headset through a generous 6.6-foot cable.
This sound card delivers simulated 7.1-channel surround sound to the headset that, in order to access, you’ll need to initially install HyperX’s Ngenuity app. (However, once activated, you won’t be required to keep the app running). The majority of the cable is dedicated to this purpose, featuring a USB plug at one end and a compact, rectangular remote at the other.
Housed within the remote are the audio processing components, including a sizable button that illuminates with a 7.1 display when the simulated surround sound is activated. Surround control is facilitated through four additional buttons, allowing you to adjust master volume and the balance between game and voice audio.
Furthermore, the sound card incorporates a shirt clip at its back, offering the convenience of attaching it to your collar or pocket while you’re in the midst of your gaming/streaming sessions.
So, Should You Buy the Hyperx Cloud Alpha S?
